not having Direct control over your agents leads to serious problems when they don't behave the way you believe they should. Judging from the company's Twitter stream, apart from complaints over missed meals, there are plenty of complaints over the attitude and behaviour of delivery staff. For example pulling Wheelies on their moped in car parks, cyclist racing slalom around vehicles downhill, beyond the inevitable complaints of going through red lights and cycling on pavements.
One of the disadvantages of being a freelance / self-employed is these people need to pay their own insurance.
On the subject of insurance it is doubtful how many of these Agents have suitable insurance for delivering takeaways. it was quoted that insurance in London for a takeaway driver on a moped with in the region of £800 a year I do not believe that many teenagers would be prepared to fork out when the return is only about £7 an hour. this leads me to believe that many of these are not covered by insurance we await in inevitable accident to find out,
On the subject of behaviour the company said they can track down all of their agents as they use a dedicated app. Agents do not seem to believe the app can do that it has been suggested many times that deliveroo place “fleet” numbers on the cumbersome boxes used, but so far that has not materialised.
