Request help for yourself or someone else

  • Extremely vulnerable residents in Brighton & Hove with no other support can now tell the council directly if they need help during the coronavirus pandemic by filling in an easy to use form. People can also fill in the form for someone they know who is in this situation and can’t get online themselves. The form asks for details of who needs help and what support is required. The information is treated in strictest confidence and used to help people as quickly as possible. The council asks that everyone who can use the online forms does so in order to keep phone lines free for those who have no alternative.

COVID-19 Vulnerabity Index

  • British Red Cross has developed a COVID-19 vulnerability index at Ward and Local Authority level. This covers demographic, clinical, economic and social vulnerabilities as well as other health needs and geographic isolation. Access to:

Online Tutoring

Below is guidance from South West Grid for Learning and CEOP for the Virtual School’s 1-1 tutors around using Skype, much of which is generic rather than application specific, and so can be adapted.  Some of these guidelines would apply to learners, not just teachers:

  • Only send documents via Skype not via email to students.
  • Please have a separate Skype account, don’t use your personal one
  • If using screen-sharing please ensure nothing else is minimised on your computer that is personal
  • Do not hold the tuition sessions in your bedroom and don’t allow the student to be in their bedroom either
  • Ask anyone else in your house to be mindful that you are holding a session and to keep noise levels down
  • Be in a well-lit environment with no personal photos or information visible
  • Only organise times of sessions with carers, no contact to be made directly with the student via any form of social media/mobile or email other than the Skype session itself
  • Please notify your organisation (preferably via a monitoring form) if other people are present in your house whilst your sessions are taking place
  • Tutor to notify their organisation of the name of the account they are using. It would be an extra safeguard to also notify of the name of the account used by the learner.
  • Be mindful that sessions might not last the usual length, due to unforeseen circumstances - there is a need to be flexible with students.

It is also recommended that organisations have a ‘code of conduct’ or similar for students as well as for staff.  These should be shared with parents/carers.  This may need to be adapted to reflect the technologies being used.

It is very important that organisations are confident about the technology they are using (e.g. see this article about Zoom) from a security/safety point of view.
